Asbestos Abatement Testing

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT

THE NOT SO MIRACULOUS MINERAL

Given everything we know about asbestos today, it is hard to believe that there was a time not so long ago when it was used in nearly every American home. From the 1930s through the 80s, asbestos was thought of as a “miracle fiber,” due to its flame-resistant qualities. By the end of last century, however, countless studies had demonstrated that asbestos is highly carcinogenic. Given its toxicity level, no restoration job can begin without first ensuring that all asbestos has been removed from a home.

Both the Environmental Protection Agency and the state of California require that asbestos testing is performed prior to any restoration project. At Allied Restoration, we work with Patriot Environmental Laboratories to ensure that all testing is thorough and efficient. To gather a sample, an inspector will remove a small sample from the property. We work to get a report back within 24 hours of sample collection. This quick turnaround means that we don’t waste time waiting for results.

In the event that materials are disturbed, the EPA requires that a specific protocol be observed to guarantee that all contaminated materials are properly handled and disposed of. Failure to comply with these rules can result in huge fines against all parties involved, including the homeowner. Once all asbestos abatement is complete, a final clearance inspection consisting of a visual examination and air testing will take place. Once the inspection is passed, regular restoration is ready to begin.

Asbestos is a very dangerous material and should not be taken lightly. Asbestos contamination is more common than you might think, especially in older homes. There’s no point in restoring a home that hides carcinogenic material, so make sure to take asbestos testing seriously before your next home restoration or renovation.

A professional contractor like Allied Restoration will take the extra precautions to test for asbestos before any construction begins. We take asbestos into consideration every time we deal with water damage, fire damage and mold remediation to make sure our clients are safe and are not exposed to any fees, fines and additional costs due to exposed asbestos.
